Holi is a time of festivity all over India and the world, celebrated with lot of vigor and enthusiasm everywhere. Holi marks the change of season in many parts of India. It is celebrated with color, meeting friends and family and merriment while keeping in touch with our spiritual and religious self.
However, for heart patients, Holi marks a significant festival, not only because of the festivity involved, but also as a reminder to take care of your health in a more cautious way. Always remember, festivals are always enjoyable only when health is by your side.

Patient with heart disease, especially with a low ejection fraction or having ischemic heart disease (with Stents or by-pass operations) are at an increased risk of health problems during any such festival- as the festival can lead to us forgetting about your health status and the precautions we must keep to stay health.
Precautions for patients with Diabetes (High Blood Sugar) during Holi:
- Avoid Sweets, Sweetened Beverages, instead insist on the good old Nimbu Paani, if possible.
- Take your medications on time, to prevent high blood glucose levels.
- Do not skip meals, while taking medications, as this can lead to low blood sugar levels.
- If you keep your blood sugar in control, problems, like evening/night cramps or tingling numbness of hands and feet can be avoided.
- You can consume sweets made with Sugarfree (Stevia) only to a certain amount.
- Keep a check on your blood sugar levels, and monitor them periodically.
- Avoid fat, and fatty foods.
Precautions for patients with Stent/Bypass Surgery during Holi:
- Take your medications on time, and do not skip medications without consultation of your doctor. Blood thinners are quite important, when it comes to patients with stents or bypass surgery, or patients even without stents or bypass surgery, but having had heart attack or unstable angina in the past.
- Keep your blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels under control. If you find any derangements in the same, consult your doctor or a cardiologist.
- Do not ignore any kind of chest pain, heaviness. Pain can occur in any of the regions – left side of chest, right side of chest, central chest area, left or right shoulder or arms, back, upper abdomen, or even upto the jaw. DO NOT IGNORE THESE SYMPTOMS and consult cardiologist asap.
- If your EF (Pumping power of heart is low), then you should avoid a lot of liquids as that may cause a build up of water in your lungs and cause breathlessness or even heart failure.
- It is important, that you take some rest, in between the festivities. Go out and meet friends and relatives, talk, chit-chat, laugh with them, make merry, but also take it slow. Rest and Enjoy, then rest again to enjoy more.
- Again, DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE YOUR MEDICATIONS- BLOOD THINNERS, HYPERTENSION MEDICATIONS OR DIABETES MEDICATIONS ON TIME.
- Avoid Tel, Ghee, Chiknai, Mirch-Masala, Poori, pakodi, Mangodi, Paratha etc.
